Open Source in the audio industry

RTAX concept

The RTAX project originated in the laboratory of our company ADV.Systems when developing hybrid analog-digital guitar processors.

TAX is a private research non - profit project aimed at supporting musicians and developers. At a time when traditional retail is raising the price of music products and production volumes are falling due to "social distancing", musicians' incomes are declining.

In all countries, this is almost not compensated by the governments, as if the musical culture does not need support, unlike other industries. To receive subsidies, you need to be a "court" musician, or instead of creativity, participate in social activities and in various traditional associations. Let's develop our industry on our own!

Having studied the market of industrial computers and comparing their capabilities with the hardware of top guitar guitar effects, we were convinced that 60% of the price lies in the redesign of the body and the popularity of the manufacturer, 30% is usability adaptation and 10% remains (not for everyone) for new interesting tech solutions.

RTAX.org

Imagine that you have a guitar combo amp that, when you replace the SD card, starts working as a bass or violin cabinet. Immediately has the necessary packages and treatments, customizable through the application. From our code, you can assemble a mobile music computer with arbitrary characteristics for your task.

The concept of Open Source allows you not only to use for free , but to modify, supplement and customize the tools that you use. We want to expand this concept and add the possibility of self-assembly of devices for your tasks, as well as changing their purpose.

Some of the opportunities that opened up for us in this project:
  • Firmware customization for instrument/genre/group;
  • Hardware configuration for your tasks;
  • Work with uncompressed audio in real time;
  • Modification of software for specific and narrowly focused solutions;

At the same time, you do not need to buy expensive equipment with support for our technologies or AES67. You can assemble the setup yourself from the available components, choose a supplier to your taste, or adapt the source code to your fleet of devices.

Following the principles of Open Source, only technical support or assembly of an individual setup is paid. Discussions and help from the RTAX community are traditionally open to everyone on the appropriate resources. Technology should not gather dust on the table, join the evolution of sound processing!
